Título
EPIDEMIOLOGICAL PROFILE OF PEDIATRIC HOSPITALIZATIONS FOR MENTAL AND BEHAVIORAL DISORDERS IN EMERGENCY CARE.
Introdução
Mental and Behavioral Disorders (MBD) are rising, making up 5% of pediatric Emergency Care (EC) visits in the U.S. New epidemiological research for MBD contributes to management.
Objetivo
Analyze the incidence and profile of MBD in EC in Brazil over the past 20 years.
Método
Data on Hospital Morbidity from the SUS (SIH/SUS) for MBD, by region and age (1-14 years), were obtained from DATASUS, covering the period from March/2008 to June/2024. Items 112 to 119 of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD) were used, type of service, sex and race. The results were entered into an electronic spreadsheet to calculate the rates and proportions.
Resultados
Between March/2008 and June/2024, DATASUS recorded 65,006 cases of morbidity due to MBD, 80.88% of which were in the EC. The EC attendances were: 37.94% in March/2008 and March/2012; 25.81% from April/2012 to April/2016; 19.43% from May/2016 and May/2020; and 16.82% from June/2020 and June/2024. Between June/2020 and June/2024, MBD was identified in 21,560 patients, 92.53% of whom were in the EC. The main variables are: South 39.61% and Southeast 30.35%, 10-14 years 84.81%, male gender 62.25%, brown 38.97% and mood disorder 31.12%. Dementias occupied 0.30% of cases and mental retardation 3.25%. Alcoholism was 3.57% and other substances, 12.76%. Neurotic, stress, and somatoform disorders: 5.24%; schizophrenia: 14.13%; mood disorder (affective): 31.12% and other MBD 29.63%. The most prevalent MBD at 0-1 and 1-4 years was 28.22% and 37.55%, respectively, due to psychoactive substances. From 5-9 years, 50.28% due to other MBD, and 10-14 years 35.36% from mood disorders.
Conclusão
Hospitalizations due to MBD have increased since March/2008. Still, the increase is not justified, and further analyses by DATASUS are needed to identify the triggering factors, especially in MBD due to psychoactive substances between 0-4 years of age. Thus, further research is needed to create protocols in EC, especially for psychoactive substances, psychotic and mood disorders.
